Press Release: 6/2/22

De Queen Public Schools Hires New DHS Principal and Teachers

The De Queen Public Schools Board of Directors met in a special session Tuesday, June 1st, and approved the hiring of a new De Queen High School Principal and several teachers throughout the district.

The Board approved Audrey Chandler to be named as the new De Queen High School Principal. She will be replacing former Principal Bryan Blackwood who announced his retirement in May. Mrs. Chandler is coming to the district with an extensive background in teaching and educational leadership in public education, including experience as a professor for Harding University and the University of Arkansas.

“We are excited to have Mrs. Audrey Chandler join our school district as our high school principal!” Superintendent Jason Sanders said. “She was definitely the most qualified candidate for our open position.  She has been a successful building-level principal for eight years in the Des Arc and Springhill Arkansas school districts. She also has experience as a district-level leader. She is currently employed at the Arkansas Department of Education in the Special Education and Fiscal Unit. Mrs. Chandler is very intelligent and has contacts across the state of Arkansas. We feel that she will be a great addition to our school and open up opportunities and resources for our students to be successful!”

Although Mrs. Chandler will be new to the district, she has spent an extensive amount of time in De Queen visiting family and is looking forward to joining the Leopard Family.

“Thank you for the opportunity to be the new high school principal at De Queen. I am deeply honored and excited to be a part of this school district.” Chandler said. “Leopard blood runs deep in my family. My mom as well as her four siblings plus a large number of my cousins graduated from De Queen. I’ve attended many school events and have always been impressed. I look forward to serving the students, parents, and community in De Queen.”

The community will have an opportunity to meet Mrs. Chandler at a DHS Open House and Meet the Principal event in July. The district will be releasing more details about the event in the near future.

During Tuesday’s Special Session, the school board also approved the following hires: Cristal Calderon as a Primary Teacher, Mindy Efird as an Elementary Teacher, Chad Lites as a Middle School Business Teacher, and Elvia Martinez as a Paraprofessional, Travis Lyda as Civics Teacher and Coach. The De Queen Public Schools Board of Directors will meet in regular session on Monday, June 13th at 5:30 pm.
